McLeod Lake Indian Band Achieves Major Milestone in Sustainable Forestry and Self-Determination

Mackenzie, BC — The McLeod Lake Indian Band (MLIB) proudly announces a historic achievement in sustainable forestry and self-determination with the acquisition of a 50% stake in Canadian Forest Products Ltd.’s forest holdings within the Mackenzie Timber Supply Area (TSA).

With this new tenure, MLIB becomes one of the largest forest license holders in the Omineca Region, underscoring its significant role in the local and regional economy. This landmark acquisition will not only enhance the Band’s influence in forestry management but also pave the way for broader economic opportunities and community development. Farris LLP (Al Hudec and Megan O’Neill) acted as legal advisors.

Chief Chingee emphasized, “Our Nation’s purchase of additional forest tenure in the region is more than an economic transaction; it is a pivotal step in our journey towards self-determination and empowerment for the McLeod Lake Indian Band.”

The license (A98730) will provide MLIB with rights to harvest 437,0072 m3 on an annual basis within the Mackenzie region. This strategic purchase not only underscores the Band’s commitment to responsible stewardship of the land but also represents a historic advancement in the overall management of the forest resource within the MLIB traditional territory (and beyond).

“This transaction will strengthen the economic position of our communities in Mackenzie, McLeod Lake, and the Omineca Region as a whole,” added Chief Chingee. “It reflects our ongoing commitment to creating lasting economic benefits and fostering a sustainable future for our people.”
