MLIB General Election 2026 – Candidate Forum

It is possible over one week to have a series of forums for the Offices of Chief, Elder, On Reserve, Off Reserve, and Youth.

Nomination Meeting	3.15	45 days before polls	21-Apr
Notice of Election	4.1	>42 days before polls	24-Apr
Candidate Forums			4-8 May

DECISION:

1. Forum yes/no
2. If Yes,
   1. Chief only
   2. All Council
   3. All Treaty 8 Directors
   4. All Land Management

Rules Evolved Over Subsequent Elections:

1. Administration is to be absolutely neutral and is to favour no candidate.
2. The event was voluntary for the candidates.
3. The forum required 2 persons from Administration, a Moderator and a person to unmute or mute persons engaged in questions to candidates.
4. The forum allowed candidates for Chief to present their platform and to articulate why they would be best for the position.
5. Attendees were allowed to direct questions to candidates.
6. Rules were established regarding respectful discussion, with the option of the moderator to suspend the conversation should the discussion get ugly. This did not need to happen as all were respectful.
