Volunteer Opportunity – Mustelid Field Trip

Cornelia Thomi is looking for volunteers for the following stations for the Mustelid field trip for grade
4 students happening on Monday, March 10th at the Historic Site in McLeod Lake. This is off the
Carp Lake Road, on Mac Toodick Road, after the bridge (to the left) when you head towards the
community and gas station.

It would be great if volunteers could be at the site at 9:00 am to get ready and then leave shortly
after the bus leaves at 2:00 pm.
Station 1: Local History tour or long-term resident to highlight local history Requires 1 knowledgeable volunteer
Station 2: Hudson’s Bay Company Fur trading post- students trade “fur pelts” for snack items
(representing flour, salt, and sugar). Requires 1-2 unskilled volunteers.
Station 3: Traditional trapping techniques/ skinning hut (Fur Trapper- Ed Lepp has confirmed
attendance)
Station 4: First Nations history and trapping stories with fire: McLeod Lake Knowledge keeper and
Elder team.

  • Bannock and hot dog/ soup lunch (served at this station) Require 1-2 unskilled volunteers
    to serve the food.
    Station 5: Winter Tracks- students snowshoe on a trail (if deep powder- best to pack down in
    advance). Follow a natural feature (river/ tree line) Look for mustelids and other local wildlife:
    explain the identifying features of tracks of other animals. Point out winter shrub browsing and
    other wildlife signs. Requires 1 or 2 skilled volunteers
    Station 6: A “physiology’ station for mustelids or just wildlife in general. Good station to review
  • skulls (predator vs. prey). Possible activities: Discuss animal locomotion in the snow; ploughers
  • (moose), floaters (lynx), and tuners (mice). Mouse Microhabitats, ‘ Jump Like a Marten’, or “
  • Wolverine Walk” etc. Requires 1- 2 volunteers.
  • Note- Cornelia will send additional information to each volunteer based on the station they have
  • selected about the activities.
